Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
This is a list of frequently asked questions as well as their answers, read the page and didn’t have your question answered..? Then go ask Impeli: here is Impeli’s Twitter (@ToparoProject), here is Impeli's Bluesky (@toparoproject.bsky.social) and here is Impeli’s YouTube (@ToparoProject). You’re best off asking on Twitter/Bluesky rather than YouTube; it’s also recommended that you @ Impeli rather than Direct Message/Chat, so Impeli sees it more quickly.
Business inquiries should be via email (toparoproject@gmail.com), Twitter Direct Message or Bluesky Chat. Questions via email are unlikely to be seen quickly as Impeli hardly ever checks them; so if you must send an email, make sure to bug Impeli in some other way so it’s checked out.
Impeli doesn’t mind being asked questions, so feel free to ask really anything (well not *anything* but you should be able to assume that).
(I know this is called an FAQ, but I haven’t really gotten any yet, so what’s here is just a few preemptive answers).
Q: I found a mistake/issue/etc on the website, what do I do?
A: Please contact Impeli (see above), include a description of what the mistake/issue/etc is, with an image/video if appropriate, and what page it is on.
Q: I found a mistake/bug/etc in a game, what do I do?
A: Please contact Impeli (see above), include a description of what the mistake/bug/etc is, with an image/video if appropriate, what game it is and what version of the game it is. See the works’ readme or equivalent for more detailed information.
Q: I found a mistake/issue/etc in something else, what do I do?
A: Please contact Impeli (see above), include a description of what the mistake/issue/etc is, with an image/video if appropriate, and what work it is.
Q: I want to give my opinion/feedback on “X”, what do I do?
A: Contact Impeli (see above), TALENA is open to both positive and negative feedback, being critical is encouraged, especially for works that are a demo of a yet to be released work. See the works’ readme or equivalent for more detailed information.
Q: When will “X” come out? Will you make “X”? Etc.
A: If the information is not already shared, your question will be ignored. Please be patient/understanding, TALENA is currently just one person, things take time; while you’re waiting, please do/enjoy something else.
Q: Can I upload/post/host downloads for official works on other websites/apps/etc?
A: Feel free to do so (assuming the work can be downloaded for free from this website); if you do, make sure all files from the original download are present and that the readme or equivalent has not had information removed from it. If the work has been modified in any way, please make this clear.
Q: Are there any restrictions on sharing/uploading gameplay/endings/music?
A: Feel free to upload what you want. It would be preferable if spoilers and the like are clearly marked and not immediately visible without specific action to click on/reveal them.
Please refrain from uploading music sourced from fully released games, they will be posted on Impeli’s YouTube channel at some point after release (this does not apply to extensions, feel free to make and upload them).
Q: Are there any restrictions on extracting and sharing content from within the files of a game?
A: No, do what you please.
Q: Are there any restrictions on creating a mod of a game and sharing it?
A: Not anything specific, treat it like a derivative work.
Q: Can I make a TALENA/Toparo Project wiki?
A: Yes, please be civil about edit wars; TALENA won’t get involved (^^;
Q: Can I translate “X” into another language?
A: Yes, please contact Impeli so that it can be linked to from this very website!
Q: I want to make a translation patch, how could I do this?
A: No idea, if you have translated the *entirety* of a game, Impeli might be interested in making an official “that language” version of the game; please contact Impeli via email, Twitter Direct Message or Bluesky Chat if you would like to discuss providing a script for a “that language” version.
Q: Can I have the source code/development materials for “X”?
A: No. Maybe once Impeli is old and grey, but don’t count on it!
Q: Will all works TALENA makes be free?
A: All works primarily made by Impeli for the Toparo Project will be free for the foreseeable future. Works made primarily by Impeli that are not for the Toparo Project are more likely than not to be free. Works made primarily by other people are unlikely to be free (should that ever happen, which is extremely unlikely).
Q: Can I use your art/music/sound effects/etc in my own works?
A: If your work is commercial in any capacity: No. If your work is a fangame/script/etc: Yes, but it would be preferred for you to make your own assets in more substantial works. Anything else: Yes. No matter what you’re making please remember to credit TALENA/Impeli where appropriate.
Just to make this clear: Using character/settings/compositions/etc in your own work? That is fine for all works. Using assets extracted/recorded/directly copied/edited/etc in your own work? That is not fine for commercial works and is (somewhat) dissuaded but allowed for other works. Note: Danmaku patterns/Stage patterns count as directly copied assets, be creative! Nobody wants to play something that’s nigh identical to official works.
Q: Derivative works?
A: There are currently no hard rules about derivative works. Things like fanart/music arrangements/fanfiction/fangames/etc are obviously fine.
Commercial derivative works are probably fine, just make sure to tell Impeli and get permission first; if many people end up wanting to make commercial derivative works, a full set of rules will be written; until then treat Toparo Project derivative works like Touhou Project derivative works (just make sure to ask Impeli first).
Note: Any works that contain real world gambling (use of real world currency for uncertain outcomes) in ANY capacity are STRICTLY FORBIDDEN! Everything else is potentially on the table, ask Impeli first.
If you do make any derivative works (commercial or not), I’d love to see it! @ me on Twitter/Bluesky or something, I probably won't see it otherwise :)
Q: I want to work on/make/assist an official TALENA work, how do I do that?
A: Currently I (Impeli) am not particularly interested in outside help, for the time being, I prefer to work on my own. I am open to a few avenues: if you would like to make music/sound effects for a game (assuming Toapro ~ the Forgotten Rotting Technology has not yet fully released), I am open to (and would greatly be interested in) discussion via email, Twitter Direct Message or Bluesky Chat. If you would like to make a game, I am open to discussion via email, Twitter Direct Message or Bluesky Chat. If you would like to make something that isn’t a game, I am open to discussion via email, Twitter Direct Message or Bluesky Chat. Please, serious inquiries only.
